Fieldwork, so far

For my current fieldwork for secondary education levels, I was placed in a Viscom class. At first I was completely out of my element, since I was never formally taught in any true Viscom classes. While I dabbled in photoshop, I never truly took any design classes involving a computer. So coming up with a lesson was quite challenging for me. My mentor teacher gave me some ideas by suggesting I google curriculums for Viscom classes. So I began googling for what felt like hours, trying to come up with something that didn't involve heavy computer use that would also fit into his already planned out curriculum.

After hours of research, and self teaching myself the principles of design (from a worksheet my mentor teacher had given me) I stumbled upon the idea of Gestalt art. Researching further, I began to see how perfect this would be to teach the students since it easily applied to the principles of design as well as not being too computer oriented. I created a lesson plan to what I feel is an interesting project, using MC Escher's work as examples for the students. I also created my own example (using scratchboard). After talking this over with my mentor teacher we decided a straight forward paper and ink (sharpie) design would work best for the restricted time frame and use of materials available to them.

So overall, I think it's going quite well. And despite the overwhelming feeling of not knowing the specific subject I was placed in, I now feel a bit more prepared for this subject and teaching a lesson.
